X-Energy Raises $700 Million in Funding

X-energy is a nuclear energy startup best known for developing high-temperature, gas-cooled Small Modular Reactors, specifically the Xe-100 model, which can generate 80 megawatts of electricity and uses unique billiard ball-sized, carbon-coated pebbles containing uranium particles as fuel, with helium gas flowing over the pebbles inside the reactor to collect heat and generate electricity via a steam turbine.

X-energy has raised $700 million in a Series D round, bringing the company’s total funding to $1.8 billion. The new funding round was led by Jane Street, with participation from Ares Management funds, ARK Invest, Corner Capital, Emerson Collective, Galvanize, Hood River Capital Management, NGP, Point72, Reaves Asset Management, Segra Capital Management, and XTX Ventures.

X-energy, headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, United States, was founded in 2009 by Kam Ghaffarian. “We are highly focused on building a world-class project and technology delivery platform to accelerate the commercialization of our Xe-100 reactor and TRISO-X fuel,” said X-energy CEO J. Clay Sell. “The success of this financing round allows us to deepen partnerships with critical deployment partners and invest in a robust and reliable supply chain to successfully deliver projects with our customers.”
